Since the late 1980s, he has participated in many criminal trials with public significance and a political component. In 1991 he created the Russian Committee of Lawyers for the Defense of Human Rights. Handled cases that had an acute political context (the case of the leader of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh A. Manucharov, the Uzbek human rights activist A. Pulatov, the Russian military pensioner in Estonia A. Miroshnichenko, the Afghan refugee A. Gafar, the employee of the Norwegian environmental organization Bellona A. Nikitin, accused high treason, etc.). Since 2004 - head of the defense of the former head of the Yukos oil company Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Died on January 12, 2013 in St. Petersburg.
