Genus. in 1937 in Leningrad. Graduated from the Faculty of Law of Leningrad State University (1960). Since 1960 - trainee, then lawyer at the Leningrad City Bar Association. Since the early 1960s, he has been associated with the dissident movement, took part in the publication of samizdat collections, for which he was persecuted by the KGB. Since the late 1980s, he has participated in many criminal trials with public significance and a political component. In 1991 he created the Russian Committee of Lawyers for the Defense of Human Rights. Handled cases that had an acute political context (the case of the leader of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh A. Manucharov, the Uzbek human rights activist A. Pulatov, the Russian military pensioner in Estonia A. Miroshnichenko, the Afghan refugee A. Gafar, the employee of the Norwegian environmental organization Bellona A. Nikitin, accused high treason, etc.). Since 2004 - head of the defense of the former head of the Yukos oil company Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Died on January 12, 2013 in St. Petersburg.
