Born in 1897 in St. Petersburg; officer in the Tsarist, then White Army (June 1919 - November 1920). Emigrated, returning to the USSR in 1926. Writer, author, member of the USSR Writers' Union since 1934. One of the first to denounce the emerging fascism. His book "War and People" was highly praised by M. Gorky. Lived in Leningrad (Griboyedov Canal Embankment, 9, Apt. 51). In April 1935, he was administratively exiled from Leningrad to Kuibyshev with his wife and son. Arrested in January 1938, died on July 8, 1939 in a prison hospital in Syzran. Rehabilitated in 1956.

On November 22, 2015, in memory of G. D. Venus, a plaque from the “Last Address” project was installed on house No. 9 on the Griboyedov Canal Embankment (Malaya Konyushennaya, 4/2) in St. Petersburg.
