In 1970 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University, in 1973 - postgraduate studies at the Institute of World Literature. He gained fame after the publication of an essay on the work of the Marquis de Sade in the journal Questions of Literature. In 1975 he defended his Ph.D. thesis "Dostoevsky and French Existentialism", which was published in 1991 in the USA as a separate book. In 1979, he was expelled from the Union of Writers for organizing the uncensored almanac Metropol in samizdat. Until 1988 they were not printed in the USSR.
