In 1978, he began publishing abroad (“Winter of ’53”, Paris, “Continent” magazine) and decided to emigrate from the USSR. Before leaving the country (1980), he became a participant in the anthology “Metropol” (1979), in which his story “Steps” was published. Participation in Metropol was subsequently assessed as a mistake.
From 1980 he lived in Vienna, then moved to West Berlin, where he was invited to a one-year creative fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, and became the first Russian writer-scholarship recipient.
