Etkind Efim Grigorievich
Definition: Soviet and Russian philologist, literary historian, translator of European poetry, translation theorist. In the 1960s and 1970s he was a dissident.
Years of life: 1918-1999
Reproduction methods:
In 1964, he acted as a witness in the defense of Joseph Brodsky at the trial, the court issued a private ruling against him, after which Etkind received a punishment from the Leningrad branch of the Union of Writers of the USSR (member of the Union of Writers since 1956). Later he openly supported A.I. Solzhenitsyn, helped him in his work, met and corresponded with A.D. Sakharov. Several articles and translations by Etkind were distributed in samizdat. In 1972-1973 participated in the preparation of the samizdat collected works of I. Brodsky. In 1974, he was expelled from the Writers' Union, deprived of academic titles, and was forced to emigrate to France. Since 1975 he taught Russian literature at a French university. He retired in 1985 and lectured in Europe and the USA.
