Genus. August 9, 1946 in Leningrad. Son of lawyer Toporova Z.N. In 1964, he studied in the literary club’s poets’ circle. In 1964-1969 he studied at the Faculty of Philology of Leningrad State University and received a diploma in German philology. Author and editor of the handwritten student magazine "Links" (1966-68), participant in the oral almanacs "For the First Time in Russian" (since 1968), co-director (together with T. G. Gnedich) of a seminar for young translators at the Writer's House (since 1969) . Since 1972, he has been published as a poet-translator and critic of foreign literature, since 1987 - as a critic of modern Russian literature, since 1990 - as a political publicist. Since 1994 - member of the editorial board of the magazine “Resurrection. New Russia" (later - "New Russia"). Since 2004 - columnist for the Political Journal. From 2000 to 2005 he was editor-in-chief of the Limbus Press publishing house. For 2013: executive secretary of the National Bestseller Award; one of the founders and jury member of the Grigoriev Poetry Prize. Member of the Writers' Union of St. Petersburg, academician of the Academy of Russian Literature. Died on August 21, 2013 in St. Petersburg.
