Born in 1898 in the village of Pervitino, Tver Governorate; Russian; education: incomplete higher education; member of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) from 1919 to 1934. Ethnographer, head of the Department of the History of Religion at Leningrad State University, director of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. Lived in Leningrad. Arrested on 03.01.1935 on charges of links with the Zinoviev opposition. Sentenced on 13.02.1935 by the Special Specialized Department of the NKVD of the USSR to 5 years in a labor camp. Imprisoned in Sazlag. Rehabilitated on 20.03.1958. Arrested in prison in February 1936 as a member of the Trotskyist-Zinoviev terrorist organization. Sentenced on 11.10.1936 by the Military Commission of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR under Art. 58-8, 58-11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to capital punishment. Shot in Leningrad on 11.10.1936. Rehabilitated on 20.03.1958 by the Military Commission of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
