Born March 19, 1894 in Sebezh, Vitebsk Province. Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences from February 1, 1933 to April 29, 1938 (expelled by the General Meeting). Lived in Leningrad (Griboyedov Canal Embankment, 37, Apt. 37). Taught at the Leningrad branch of the Sverdlov Communist Academy and the Leningrad Historical and Linguistic Institute. Deputy Chairman of the Archaeographic Commission (since 1929), Director of the Historical and Archaeographic Institute (in 1933-1935). Shortly before his arrest, he was removed from the post of director of the Historical and Archival Institute. Transferred to Tashkent. At the time of his arrest, he was deputy chairman of the Kazakhstan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Arrested April 29, 1936. Accused of Trotskyism. Sentenced by the Supreme Court on 11.10.1936 to capital punishment. Shot on the same day. Posthumously rehabilitated, reinstated in the USSR Academy of Sciences on 11.08.1967.
