Genus. in 1923 Graduated from the Law Institute. Participated in the war in 1941-1945.In 1949–1953 worked as a lawyer in the system of the Ministry of Armaments of the USSR. Collected and disseminated information on issues of Zionism and Israel.
Arrested 06/06/1953. Accused of spying for the United States and Israel. Sentenced by the Military Tribunal of the Moscow Military District to be shot. Execution replaced by 25 years in strict regime camps, 5 years of northern exile, 5 years of loss of civil rights.
In 1962 sentence reduced to 10 years. Released in 1963. He was in exile in Karaganda. He worked as a lawyer, continued Zionist and democratic activities. In 1966 received a "clean" passport. Moved to Ukraine, to Odessa. In 1970 emigrated to Israel. He launched activities in defense of the right of Soviet Jews to freely leave and to assist political prisoners in the USSR. In 1973 published a book of memoirs "The Fourth Dimension" in Russian.
In 1974 created the Center for the Study of Soviet Prisons, Psychiatric Prisons and Concentration Camps of the USSR, which he led until the end of his life. In 1978, he created a half-hour film "Country of Prisoners" based on material filmed in the Soviet Union with hidden cameras, which was commented on by former prisoners. In 1979, he published studies on women's camps, in particular, for women with children, after which the Supreme Soviet of the USSR announced a general amnesty for women with children under 7 years old and reduced the term to half for women with children under 12 years old.
