Genus. in 1898 in St. Petersburg; Jew; higher education - graduated from Petrograd State University (LSU) in 1923. In 1934 - professor at the Department of History of the Middle Ages at LIFLI, then head of the department. Since 1944 he has worked part-time at the Hermitage, and since 1948 he has been a deputy. Director for the scientific and scientific-educational part of the Hermitage. In the summer of 1949, while on vacation, he was arrested and accused of counter-revolutionary agitation . At the same time, his brother Gregory was arrested and died during the investigation. Convicted by the decision of the OSO at the USSR Ministry of State Security dated 08/05/1950 under Art. 58-10 part 1, 58-11 to 10 years in labor camp. Released   01/11/1955, by decision of the Central Commission dated 12/27/1954. After his release, he was appointed to the post of deputy head of the Department of the History of Western European Art of the Hermitage, and from 1960 he headed the scientific library of the Hermitage. At the same time, since 1960 - head of the department of history of the Middle Ages, Faculty of History, Leningrad State University.
