Genus. in 1903 in Lithuania, as a teenager he emigrated to Germany with his family. In 1921 he joined the German Communist Party. In 1929 he was expelled from the KKE for belonging to the left opposition. In 1931 (according to other sources, in 1927) he was recruited as an agent by the OGPU. Being one of the leaders of the German Trotskyist organization, he contributed to a split in its ranks and in 1933 he transferred back to the KKE. Having moved to the USSR that same year, he was engaged in provocative work in the circles of potential oppositionists, which resulted, in particular, in the arrest of V. Serge. In the 40-50s. one of the organizers of the Soviet spy network in the United States. Exposed and arrested in 1956, in 1957 he was sentenced to 7 years in prison for espionage.
