Born on November 7, 1938 in the village. Gudoniai, Lazdija district, Lithuania. Higher education theologian, graduated from Kaunas Theological Seminary (1962). Since 1972 - founder and first editor of the Chronicle of the Lithuanian Catholic Church (No. 1-57). In 1978, he was one of the founders of the Catholic Committee for the Defense of the Rights of Believers, a Lithuanian human rights association. Before his arrest, he was a priest in Kibyartai, Vilkaviskis district, Lithuania. Arrested 05/06/1983. Sentenced by the Supreme Court of the Lithuanian SSR on December 2, 1983 under Art. 68 part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Lithuanian SSR (“anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda”) by the 6th year of the ITL and the 4th year of exile. He served his sentence in the Perm camps and in Mordovia. By decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Council dated June 18, 1987, the remaining term was reduced by half. In June 1988, he spent 10 days in Tomsk prison. Sent into exile. Was located in the Krivosheinsky district of the Tomsk region: in the village. Starosainakovo, then to the village. Krivosheino; worked in a workshop making hockey sticks. Released on October 31, 1988. Returned to Lithuania. Rector of Kaunas Theological Seminary (1990). Archbishop of Kaunas (since 1996). Chairman of the Lithuanian Catholic Bishops' Conference (1999-2002 and since 2005). Grand Commander of the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas (1998), holder of a number of other government awards. One of the founders (2001) of the Museum of Diocese History (Kaunas, Lithuania), where he donated part of his personal collection on the history of the publication of the Chronicles of the LCC.
