Zisels Yosif Samoylovich

Definition: Jewish public figure of Ukraine, member of the supervisory board of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union for Human Rights. During the Soviet years, he was a member of the dissident and human rights movement in the USSR, a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group (UHG), an employee of the Working Commission for Investigating the Use of Psychiatry for Political Purposes, a distributor of samizdat, and an activist in the Jewish national movement.

Genus. in 1946 in Tashkent; Jew; higher education; engineer. Lived in Chernivtsi, Ukrainian SSR. Arrested 12/08/1978. Sentenced by the Chernivtsi Regional Court on 04/05/1979 under Art. 187-1 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR to 3 years of penitentiary. After his release, he lived in Sokiryany, Chernivtsi region, Ukrainian SSR. Arrested 10/19/1984. Sentenced on 04/10/1985 under Art. 187-1 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR to 3 years of penitentiary. In 1987, he refused the proposed amnesty, because he did not want to sign an obligation to renounce political activity.
In 1988 he created the first independent Jewish organization in Ukraine in Chernivtsi. In 1989, he took part in the creation of the Vaad (Confederation of Jewish Organizations and Communities) of the USSR and became its co-chairman. Since 1991 - Chairman of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities (Vaad of Ukraine), Executive Vice President of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine. In 2002, at the founding congress of the Eurasian Jewish Congress, he was elected Chairman of the General Council.
