In 1988 she was one of the founders of the Estonian National Independence Party (ERSP) and its chairman from 1988-1992. In 1990-1992 she participated in the work of the “alternative parliament” - the Congress of Estonia. She participated in the Estonian presidential elections on October 20, 1992, finishing fourth (4.3%). In the government of President Lennart, Meri took the post of Minister of Internal Affairs. Resigned on November 27, 1993. Member of the Union of Fatherland and Res Publica party, formed in 1995. Converted to Catholicism in the mid-1990s. Head of the non-profit association "Caritas Eesti", part of the international Catholic charitable confederation "Caritas". In recent years he has lived at the monastery of St. Birgitta in Pirita.
