Balabanov Mikhail Solomonovich

Born January 22, 1873 in Chernigov. Member of the first Social Democratic circles of 1892-93, graduated from Novorossiysk University, since 1903 a Menshevik. From October 1905 in St. Petersburg he was the secretary of the Menshevik newspaper Nachalo, secretary of the Social Democratic faction of the 1st State Duma. In 1911 he moved to Kyiv and became a member of the editorial board of Kievskaya Mysl. During the First World War he was a defencist. In 1917 he was a member of the Kyiv Committee of the RSDLP, a member of the Central Ukrainian Rada. Arrested March 15, 1920. Sentenced: March 23, 1920, accused of organizing legal unions. Sentence: release with deprivation of all rights, amnestied in December 1920. Worked in the field of history of the working class of Russia, on issues of cooperation. He was a professor at the Leningrad Institute of National Economy. In 1930 he lived in Tashkent. Arrested in 1930. Sentenced to 3 years in a political prison. In 1938 he lived in Leningrad (25 Nekrasov St., Apt. 9), research fellow at the Academy of Sciences, professor of the Marxism Department at the Leningrad Institute of Trade and Commodity Science, personal pensioner. Arrested on 18.04.1938 (according to the house register - no later than 18.03.1938); accused of participating in a counter-revolutionary Menshevik organization; sentenced by the current OS under the NKVD of the USSR on 26.07.1939 to exile to Kazakhstan for 5 years; released from custody on 03.09.1939. Rehabilitated in the 1939 case of the VT LVO on 28.03.1957.
