Born in 1887 in St. Petersburg, into a noble family. Participant in the student movement. In 1906-1918 - Menshevik. In 1911 he was arrested and exiled to Vilnius for 2 years. In 1914 he was arrested again and exiled for 3 years to the Yenisei province (city of Krasnoyarsk). In 1917 - editor of "Soldier's Herald", "Izvestia" of the Petrograd Soviet; participated in the analysis of manuscript collections and personal libraries of members of the Imperial House. In 1919-1929 he taught at school. From 1926 - associate professor at Leningrad State University, research fellow at the Research Institute RANION. Arrested on October 18, 1929 in connection with the "Academy of the Academy of Sciences" (according to some sources, earlier, in the spring of 1929, he was arrested for organizing a history circle for schoolchildren). On May 10, 1931, he was sentenced to 5 years in a labor camp under Article 58-11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR. He was imprisoned in Svirlag. By the resolution of the OGPU Collegium of September 9, 1933, he was released early on November 14, 1933. He returned to Leningrad, where he was engaged in contract literary work for the Institute of Russian Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was arrested again on February 10, 1938 by the Leningrad Regional Directorate of the NKVD, accused under Articles 58-8, 17-58-8, 58-10, 11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR - "for participating in an anti-Soviet Menshevik organization"; in the same case with S. I. Kovalev, M. N. Martynov and other historians). He was sentenced by the resolution of the Special Special Department under the NKVD of the USSR on October 19, 1940 to 8 years in a labor camp. Sent to Oneglag, Arkhangelsk Region. Died in prison on November 25, 1942 (according to other sources, executed in 1940 (Brachev, 1997), died in a camp in 1940 (Kaganovich)). Rehabilitated in 1956.
