Genus. in 1887 in St. Petersburg, in a noble family. Member of the student movement. In 1906-1918. - Menshevik. In 1911 he was arrested and exiled to Vilna for 2 years. In 1914 he was again arrested and exiled for 3 years to the Yenisei Province. (Krasnoyarsk). In 1917 - editor of "Soldier's Bulletin", "Izvestia" of the Petrosoviet; participated in the analysis of manuscript collections and personal libraries of members of the Imperial House. In 1919-1929. taught at school. Since 1926 - associate professor of Leningrad State University, researcher at the Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Arrested on 10/18/1929 in connection with the "case of the Academy of Sciences" (according to some reports, earlier, in the spring of 1929, he was arrested for organizing a historical circle of schoolchildren). 05/10/1931 sentenced to 5 years in a labor camp (article 58-11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR). He served his term in SvirLag. By the decision of the Collegium of the OGPU of September 9, 1933, he was released ahead of schedule on November 14, 1933. He returned to Leningrad, where he was engaged in contract literary work for the IRLI of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Arrested again on February 10, 1938 by the NKVD LO (Articles 58-8, 17-58-8, 58-10, 11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR - "for participation in the anti-Soviet Menshevik organization"; in one case with S. I. Kovalev, M. N. Martynov and other historians). By the decision of the OSO under the NKVD of the USSR of 10/19/1940, he was sentenced to 8 years in labor camp. Sent to OnegLag (Arkhangelsk region). He died in places of detention on November 25, 1942 (according to other sources, he was shot in 1940 (Brachev, 1997), died in a camp in 1940 (Kaganovich)). Rehabilitated in 1956
