Born 19 (31/01/1865) in the Klin churchyard, Toropetsk district, Pskov province, in the family of a rural priest. He studied at the Pskov Theological Seminary in 1878-1883. In 1888 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and was appointed to the Pskov Theological Seminary as a teacher. In 1891 he became a monk. He served in Warsaw (Poland) and Pennsylvania (USA). In 1907 he was recalled to Russia and served in the Yaroslavl diocese. A convinced monarchist, he became chairman of the Yaroslavl branch of the Union of Russian People. In 1913, due to contradictions with the governor, he was transferred by the Archbishop of Lithuania and Vilnius. In 1915, when Russian troops left Vilna, he moved to Moscow. Since November 21 (December 4). 1917 - Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, the first after the restoration of the patriarchate in Russia. He opposed the decree of the Soviet government on the separation of church and state, and was hostile to the conclusion of the Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty. In his messages he called on believers to disobey Soviet power, anathematized it, and actively opposed the seizure of church valuables for the needs of the hungry. For counter-revolutionary activities in May 1922.   prosecuted and placed under house arrest in the Donskoy Monastery. Died 04/07/1925. Canonized by the Russian Church as a saint by the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church on 10/09/1989.
