Poppe Nikolay Nikolaevich
Soviet and American linguist, ethnographer, specialist in Altai languages, Mongolian studies and Turkic studies. Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1932).
Genus. in 1897 in Yantai, in the family of an employee of the Russian consulate in this city. In 1921 he graduated from the FON of Petrograd University. In 1923-1941. taught at PSU/LSU. In 1923-1928. associate professor, since 1928 professor. He also worked at the Asian Museum. Since 1931, head of the department of Mongolian studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In the second half of the 1920s - early 1930s, he repeatedly went on expeditions to Mongolia and Buryatia. Since 1932, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was arrested by the NKVD in 1937 in connection with the case of Chuvash bourgeois nationalists. During the war he found himself in Nazi-occupied territory. In 1942 he began to voluntarily cooperate with the Germans. In 1943 he went to Germany, after 1945 he hid from the authorities. In 1949 he emigrated to the USA, where he taught at the University of Washington in the Faculty of Far Eastern Studies, a professor at this university until 1968. He died in Seattle in 1991.
