Samoilovich Alexander Nikolaevich
Linguist-orientalist, professor, full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences
Born in 1880 in Nizhny Novgorod; higher education, linguist and orientalist. From 1934 to 1937 - Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Lived in Leningrad, Ropshinskaya St., Bldg. 23, Apt. 17. Arrested on October 2, 1937 by the NKVD of the USSR on charges of having been an agent of Japanese intelligence since 1907, and of having created a counter-revolutionary organization in 1935-1936. Sentenced on February 13, 1938 under Article 58-1 "a", 58-8, 58-11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to capital punishment. Shot on February 13, 1938. Rehabilitated by the decision of the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court on 25.08.1956.
On November 26, 2017, a personal memorial sign was installed on house No. 23 on Ropshinskaya Street in St. Petersburg in memory of A.N. Samoylovich as part of the Last Address project.
