Born in 1923 in the village of Ternovka, Smelyansky district, Kiev region; Ukrainian; member of the Komsomol. Participant in the Great Patriotic War. Studied in the second year of the Moscow Aviation Institute. Arrested in 1948. Sentenced in 1948 by a Special Conference of the MGB of the USSR under Article 54-1a and Article 197   Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR to 25 years in a labor camp. Transferred to Rechlag. On January 21, 1952, he escaped from the Kapitalnaya mine together with Pyotr Sablin. Detained. In February 1952, he was sentenced for escape under Article 58-14 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 10 years in a labor camp with credit for four years already served. In the fall of 1955, he was transferred to Steplag, Kazakhstan. He worked in a mine in Karaganda.
