Genus. 18.09.1939. He was one of the first Sovietologists to study the human rights movement. He was director of the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies in Washington, DC, before becoming a professor at George Washington University. Research interests include the history of the Soviet Union, political developments of the post-Soviet era, Russian studies and the history of Eastern Europe. He retired in 2004. In 1969, together with Slavists Karel van het Rewe and Willem Jan Bezmer, he founded the Alexander Herzen Foundation. The purpose of the foundation was to publish materials on the Soviet dissident movement. The Herzen Foundation first succeeded in publishing in the Western world the works of Soviet dissidents Andrei Amalrik, Yuli Daniel, Larisa Bogoraz, Andrei Sinyavsky and Pavel Litvinov. At the end of the same 1969, Reddway supported the organization of the Keston Institute (Center for the Study of Religion and Communism); he is rightfully considered a kind of “godfather” of this organization. In the second half of the 1970s, together with Pavel Litvinov and Ed Klein, he was a member of the editorial board of the Chronicle of Human Rights magazine, founded in the USA by Valery Chalidze. Participated as an expert in the work of the First International Congress in memory of Andrei Sakharov “Peace, progress, human rights”, held in 1991 in Moscow. In 2007, together with Vladimir Bukovsky, Garry Kasparov and Sir Geoffrey Bindman, he signed a letter in defense of Larisa Arap, who was forcibly hospitalized in a mental hospital.
