Ginzburg Alexander Ilyich
Definition: Journalist, publisher, participant in the human rights movement in the USSR, member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, compiler of one of the first collections of samizdat (Syntax), member of the editorial board of the magazine Continent in 1979-1990.
Years of life: 1936-2002
Reproduction methods:
Genus. In 1936 in Moscow; Jew. In 1956 he entered the journalism department of Moscow State University, worked in the theater and on television, acted in films, and was a correspondent for the newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets. Arrested 07/01/1960 on charges of “anti-Soviet agitation”, 196-1 (in fact, for cultural and social activities, publishing the uncensored magazine “Syntax”), then the article was replaced with a common criminal one. Sentenced to 2 years in prison. After his release, he returned to Moscow and worked as a laborer at the Literary Museum. In 1966 he entered the evening department of the Moscow Institute of History and Archives. In 1966 From the available materials on the case of A. Sinyavsky and Y. Daniel, he compiled a collection - “White Book”, which marked the beginning of a new genre of samizdat human rights literature - documentary collections about political processes. In November-December 1966, the White Book was sent to official Soviet authorities, handed over to some cultural figures and published abroad. Arrested on January 23, 1967. His case was combined with Y. GALANSKOVA, A. DOBROVOLSKY and V. LASHKOVA; all were charged with producing and distributing anti-Soviet literature and having connections with anti-Soviet foreign centers (“The Trial of Four”). Sentenced by the Moscow City Court on January 12, 1968 under Article 70 Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 5 years in a penal colony. He served his sentence in Dubravlaga and Vladimir prison.
After his release he settled in Tarusa. He was under open police surveillance. In 1974, he took on the duties of manager of the Russian Public Fund for Assistance to Political Prisoners and Their Families. In May 1976, he became one of the founders of the public Group for Assistance in the Implementation of the Helsinki Agreements in the USSR or the Moscow Helsinki Group. Arrested on 02/03/1977. Sentenced by the Kaluga Regional Court on 07/13/1978 under Art. 70 part 2 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 8 years of penal colony. He served his sentence in Dubravlaga. Deprived of Soviet citizenship and expelled from the USSR on April 28, 1979. Rehabilitated on February 27, 1992 by the conclusion of the Kaluga Region Prosecutor's Office on the basis of the Law “On the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression.” Abroad, he lived first in the USA, then in France. He was the head of the Russian Cultural Center in Montgeron, then, until 1997, a leading columnist for the Russian Thought newspaper (Paris). Died in 2002
