On 10/12/1981 in Mtskheta, about 2 thousand people gathered near the temple to protest against the reduction of Georgian language lessons in Georgian educational institutions. In connection with this demonstration, several people were detained, incl. Marina Baghdavadze, they were released on the same day, but an investigation into the case of “Hooliganism” began. They were at large until the trial. The court found them guilty and sentenced them to 5 years in prison each, but conditionally, i.e., leaving them free until the first violation of the law.
In May 1982, Baghdavadze Merab, the father of Baghdavadze Marine, was arrested on grossly fabricated charges of “assault on a government official.” Investigators openly said that the case was opened on orders from above to put pressure on his convicted daughter and her friends. Sentenced to 3 years in prison. The daughter went on a hunger strike until her father was released. Released by decision of the cassation court, sentenced to probation.
Arrested on July 11, 1983 in Tbilisi for participating in a demonstration demanding the release of previously arrested Georgian student activists.
