Chanturia Georgy Otarovich

Definition: Soviet dissident, organizer of numerous anti-Soviet and anti-Russian rallies. After the collapse of the USSR, he was a Georgian politician, leader of the nationalist party NPD (from 1988 to 1994).

Genus. in 1959 in Tbilisi, student of the history department of Tbilisi University. In the 1970s, he began to actively participate in the dissident and nationalist movement. In 1978 he became one of the first stiharniks of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia. In 1979 he was arrested for the first time for dissident activity. In 1981 he became one of the founders of the revived National Democratic Party. After the revival of the NPD, he participated in the underground release in Tbilisi of the samizdat magazine "Moambe" ("Bulletin"), the bulletin "Kartuli Khronika" ("Georgian Chronicle"). Arrested 07/11/1983. 08/09/1983 convicted by the Tbilisi City Court under Art. 206-3 of the Criminal Code of the Georgian SSR (organization or active participation in group actions that violate public order) for 3 years in prison. He was held in the Kirovo-Chepetsky ITK No. 12 and the Kirov ITK No. 7. Pardoned in 1985. Released on 08/30/1985. He returned to Tbilisi, in 1989 he became one of the organizers of the bloody April rally. In 1991, at the initiative of President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, he was prosecuted, but due to the removal of Gamsakhurdia from power, the trial and the criminal case were terminated. 12/03/1994 was shot in the yard of his own house.
