Born in 1935 in Kyiv. In 1951, together with classmates I. Mednikov and A. Partashnikov, he founded the "League of Democratic Revival" (distributed anti-Soviet leaflets). In May 1953, he and A. Partashnikov distributed leaflets on behalf of the "Committee of Democratic Unity". In February 1956, he joined the underground group "Socialist Union of Struggle for Freedom". On February 28, 1956, he distributed several leaflets in mailboxes in Kyiv. The next day, March 1, 1956, all members of the organization were arrested. On June 8, 1956, he was sentenced by the Kyiv Regional Court to 6 years in a labor camp. He was released on parole on July 4, 1960.
