Gamarnik Yan Borisovich
Born in 1894 in Zhitomir; studied at the law faculty of Kyiv University. Until October 1917, he was a member and, for a time, secretary of the Kyiv Committee of the RSDLP (b). He took part in the preparation of the October Uprising in Kyiv; on October 27 (November 9), he was elected to the Revolutionary Committee. In 1918-1920, he was a member of the underground All-Ukrainian Center and one of the leaders of the Odessa, Kharkov and Crimean party organizations. In 1919, he was a member of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Southern Group of Forces of the 12th Army, and later a commissar of the 58th Infantry Division. In 1920-1923, he was the chairman of the Odessa and Kiev Provincial Committees of the Communist Party (b) of Ukraine, and the chairman of the Kyiv Provincial Executive Committee. In 1923-1928, he was the chairman of the Far Revolutionary Committee, the regional executive committee and the secretary of the Far Regional Party Committee. In 1928, he was the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus. From October 1929, he was the head of the Political Directorate of the Red Army and a member of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR; editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Krasnaya Zvezda". From June 1930, he was the deputy people's commissar of defense and deputy chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR. G. was a delegate to the 10th-17th party congresses, was elected as a candidate member of the Central Committee at the 14th, and a member of the Central Committee of the party at the 15th-17th. He shot himself on the eve of a possible arrest in the "Tukhachevsky case" on 31.05.1937 in Moscow. He was rehabilitated by the CPC under the Central Committee of the CPSU in party terms on 07.09.1955.
