Kurbas Alexander Stepanovich
Ukrainian director, actor, teacher
Born 12.03. (according to other data, 02.25.) 1887 in the village. Old Sambir (Galicia, modern Lviv region of Ukraine); Ukrainian; from a family of actors; higher education; ex. member of the Social Democratic Party. He studied at the University of Vienna and Lvov (graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy). In 1917–1922, the head of the “Young Theater” in Kyiv, organizer and artist. director of the Berezil Theater (since 1922). In 1925 he moved with the theater to Kharkov. People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1925). In October 1933 he was suspended from work in the theater, and in December he was deprived of the title of People's Artist. He left for Moscow, and from December 1933 he became a production director at the Maly Theater and the Jewish Theater. Address before arrest: Moscow, 3rd Tverskaya-Yamskaya st., 12, apt. 5. Arrested in Moscow on December 26, 1933 in the case of the “Ukrainian Military Organization”, on February 28, 1934 he was transferred to Kharkov. By a resolution of the judicial troika at the Collegium of the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR dated 04/09/1934, he was sentenced under Art. 54-11 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR to 5 years of labor camp. Imprisoned in the 4th department of the Belbaltlag (arrived 05/17/1934). He was at the Vygozero camp, then in Medvezhyegorsk, and staged a play at the Central Theater of the BBK. In October 1935 he was sent to Solovki. He was kept at the Kremlin camp and staged plays in the camp theater. Transferred to Anzer camp. By resolution of the Special Troika of the UNKVD LO dated 10/09/1937 he was sentenced to VMN. Shot on November 3, 1937 in the Sandormokh tract (Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic). Rehabilitated on April 19, 1957 by the Kharkov Regional Court and on January 31, 1957 by the Military Tribunal of the Northern Military District. K.’s symbolic grave is located in city cemetery No. 13 in Kharkov. In 2002, a monument to K. was erected in Kyiv.
